God's Roof

The lines that are drawn are faded and cracked.
They'll grease your palm to shoot a man in the back.
Honor and loyalty are something you'll have to prove.

The value of life has been jaded and trashed.
There's a price on his head, blood money paid in cash.
But you're kidding yourself if you think you've got nothing to lose.

Young man, I hope you will listen to me.
Young man, all my good advice is free.
They say don't do the crime if you can't do the time.
And I am the living proof.
There's a hole in God's roof.

In the blink of an eye and in a muzzle's flash
They'll be a suitcase waiting in a secret stash.
And by this time tomorrow you'll be whistling a different tune.

Another mother mourns with her flag at half mast.
Got your pistols drawn, the heat's closing in fast.
And your simple plan is now a dog day afternoon.

Young man, the devil will tempt you with greed.
Young man, don't dare to follow his lead.
They say don't do the crime if you can't do the time.
And I am the living proof.
There's a hole in God's roof.

Forgive me father for I have sinned.
Just like my daddy done and his before him.
I come from a long line of killers. And I've taken many a man's life.
So say a prayer for what the future holds and for my pregnant wife.

Young man, the Governor's call hasn't come.
Young man, my walk down the hall has begun.
At ten o'five I'll cease to be alive
Son, don't be the living proof.
Another hole in God's roof.
